Both swords (the Tizona on this page, and the Colada on this page) belonged to
the Castilian knight Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, known as "El Cid Campeador"
in the XI century.
He was the prototype of the knight and loyal vassal who took part with his King
Alfonso VI in the conquest of Toledo.
Subsequently he conquered the city and kingdom of Valencia to the moors.
Engraved on the blade is, "YO SOY LA TIZONA FUE FECHA EN LA ERA DE MILLE QUARENTA" (I am the Tizona dated in the era of 1040)
