Darth Vader Lightsaber



Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith and one of the most feared figures in the galaxy, rules the Empire alongside his Master, the Emperor. Once a promising young Jedi named Anakin Skywalker, he gave into his anger and turned to the dark side. Though transformed from Jedi to Sith, Vader retains his most powerful weapon, his lightsaber.

Vader's lightsaber prop used in Star Wars: A New Hope, was in reality, an antique flash gun. This flash gun was originally produced in England in the 1930's and 1940's. For conversion to a lightsaber, a six-bubble clear display panel taken from an old calculator was added to the control panel, and rubber grips added along the handle's base. A D-ring was also added to the front shroud.

During filming, the original release lever on the lightsaber's control box was apparently damaged. This piece had to be re-attached using a metal connector similar in appearance to a nail. Otherwise, the flashgun was relatively unmodified

It is interesting to note that during the Star Wars trilogy, Darth Vader actually utilized several different lightsabers. As discussed, the lightsaber used in A New Hope was crafted from a flashgun. Some stills and publicity shots, however, show Vader with a lightsaber made from a different type of flashgun that varied in several minor details. In The Empire Strikes Back the grips on the handle of the lightsaber were longer and the side panels on the control box were black (as opposed to being silver in A New Hope).

In Return of the Jedi, Vader sported yet another lightsaber. This version was created from a yet another, different style of flashgun with numerous hardware and electrical components added for detailing. Publicity photos of Vader carrying several other different lightsabers throughout the trilogy have also been published over the years.
