Luke Skywalker Lightsaber:
The Story Behind the Prop
"I am Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight…"
Having spent most of his adolescent years with his aunt and uncle on the harsh desert world of Tatooine, Luke was unaware of his true heritage as the son of Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala. But under the direction of Obi Wan Kenobi, Luke would take a new path leading to his true destiny as a Jedi Knight like his father before him. Following this tradition, with the Force as his ally, Luke's most powerful weapon is his lightsaber…
Master Replicas' reproduction of Luke's lightsaber from Star Wars: Return of The Jedi captures all of the fine details of this noble weapon. MR examined the original filming props and compiled information on color, finish, and dimensions to achieve an extremely accurate replica.
Of particular interest is the fact that there were actually several different versions of the saber used during the filming of Return of the Jedi. The "hero" version - the detailed prop used for close-up shots - was machined entirely from metal, and featured a removable panel on top of the control box. This revealed interior circuitry that at one time apparently powered the small, triangular LEDs on the side. This detail, however, never appeared on camera.
Also on this version, a small set-screw is visible near the emitter tip. This screw was used to secure the metal rod that stood in for the saber's blade during shooting. Later, in post-production, the energy beam was rotoscoped in as an animated beam of light.
The hero prop was used in filming about half of the scenes in which the lightsaber appeared, such as the battle on Jabba's sail barge. For other scenes, the metal version was replaced by one of several resin "stunt" versions. This was done so that the more expensive hand-made metal prop would not be damaged during the filming of action sequences.
The stunt version differs somewhat from the hero prop. It was composed of machined-metal parts, along with resin components covered in silver duct tape to simulate a metal finish. Oddly, it also incorporated the center band from an antique Graflex flash gun around the mid- section. This is the same band that appeared on Obi Wan's and Luke's sabers in Star Wars: A New Hope. This saber can be seen hanging on Luke's belt when he is talking to Leia in the Ewok village and on the arm of the Emporer's chair when he is speaking to Luke on the Death Star.
For the last few years, the metal hero saber and a resin stunt version have both been on public display in the Star Wars: Magic of Myth traveling exhibition. As the owner of one of Master Replicas' limited-edition, officially-licensed replicas of the hero prop, you will be proud to know that you possess an authentic copy of one of the most recognizable and invaluable film props on display in this tour.
